Dear Legion Family Members and Friends,

"We will be forever grateful to The American Legion. I can't begin to thank you enough for all the help you provided us. We appreciate the support you've given the community."

Those are the words of Marilyn Whitmore , who lost her home one year ago during a massive tornado in Moore, Okla. Whitmore's husband, Larry, served our nation with honor. When the dust settled and the reality of the tragedy sunk in, the Whitmores turned to The American Legion for help.

The Whitmores are not alone in their gratitude toward The American Legion. Since 1989 when the Legion made NEF a permanent fixture, more than $8 million of generous donations have been distributed to disaster victims like the Whitmores. NEF also has helped rebuild posts in New York and New Jersey washed away by Superstorm Sandy, assisted victims of river flooding in the Dakotas and provided much-needed funds to Sons of The American Legion members in Arizona after wildfires decimated their homes.

Just this week, I was grateful for over $51,000 worth of donations to NEF presented during the Legion's Spring Meetings in Indianapolis.

But we still have a long way to go to reach my fundraising goal of $1 million for NEF. Please consider a donation to keep the fund stable and to help your comrades who will find themselves recovering from a natural disaster. To donate, please visit www.legion.org/NEF

It's not a question of when a disaster will hit, it's a question of when it will hit. As the Whitmores can attest, when future emergencies arise, The American Legion will be there to provide much-needed financial assistance to veterans.

Thank you for what you do every day on behalf of veterans, their families and the communities in which they live.
