TeamSTEPPS Webinar Series (December): Integrating Quality Methods to Improve Teamwork and Patient Safety – Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
9 December, 2015 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm EST
This webinar will highlight how different quality improvement models and methods can be integrated into a single patient safety program and will feature presenters from the UCLA Health System: Randolph Steadman, MD, MS, Professor, Vice Chair, and Director of the UCLA Simulation Center; Yue Ming Huang, EdD, MHS, Associate Adjunct Professor and Education/Operations Director of the UCLA Simulation Center; Robert Martin, PsyD, Performance Excellence Specialist; and Kenneth Miller, RN, MSN, CCRN, Nursing Simulation Education Coordinator.
The presentation will focus on methods such as Lean and TeamSTEPPS and approaches for using aspects of each in an organizational patient safety program. Specifically, the presentation will seek to:
  • Compare two quality improvement models designed to improve patient safety;
  • Discuss how to integrate the models into a single program;
  • Demonstrate three Lean tools that can be applied to a TeamSTEPPS course; and
  • Evaluate exercises designed to utilize these tools.

This course introduces basic navigation and functionality features of the PSR system and the roles of system users, such as event reporters, event handlers, and investigators. The course can be accessed through MHS Learn.

On-Demand eLearning: Patient Safety Reporting: Intermediate Course*
Targeted to Patient Safety Managers and other MTF staff already familiar with basic functionalities of the Patient Safety Reporting System, this course is designed to help learners hone the decision-making skills needed to effectively manage patient safety event data in PSR, as part of the ongoing effort to eliminate preventable harm at MTFs.

This self-paced module outlines the Patient Safety Program's suggested practices for conducting a root cause analysis, from the initial reporting of a patient safety event through the formation of the RCA Team to the identification of contributing factors and root causes and the recommendation of corrective actions.
